Backfill should be placed in lifts no greater than shown in table 15-1, preferably 8 inches or less and dependingon the soil and type of equipment available.  No backfill should be placed that contains frozen lumps of soil, as later thawing will produce local soft spots.  Backfill should not be placed on muddy, frozen, or frost-cov-ered ground.  Methods of compaction controf during construction are described in TM 5-818-4/AFM 88-5.
